3 Critical Steps for Building a Brand on Social Media

Whether building a company brand or personal brand, the utilization of social media is absolutely critical.  Using one or more of the various platforms can be a powerful way to increase exposure for your brand and reach a new audience of prospective clients.  With this power also comes great responsibility.

Here are 3 critical steps agencies and their employees should take when building a brand on social media.

Respect Others:  This may seem like an obvious statement, but things can get heated on social media.  There is a certain amount of anonymity when someone is typing something into a phone, or a computer and it may cause some to take more liberties than they should.   Controversial topics are not bad in and of themselves and do not necessarily need to be avoided.  However, there must be an understanding that there will be many opinions on certain topics, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.   And while controversy is generally a product of a disagreement, being able to debate a topic respectfully and generate meaningful discussion is key.

Be Informed:  Social Media can be a powerful marketing tool.   It provides a great way for someone to share information and insight quickly and easily with a large audience.   This can be a great way to communicate valuable insurance information, not just with clients, but with prospects as well.  It is important to keep in mind that anything that someone posts should be accurate.   The consequences of posting erroneous or incomplete information can be loss of credibility and damage the reputation of both the individual posting and the agency they represent.  Taking time to research and confirm all the facts before clicking post will save everyone a lot of time and trouble in the long run.

Provide Value:  As social media continues to get easier and more accessible, the popularity and usage continues to rise as well.  As more competitors join social media, it is important to stand out from the crowd.  What you will often find is a lot of the same information being shared over and over.  This lack of creativity can mean great opportunity for those willing to do something different.

It is critical that agents take time to create content that is meaningful to their audience.  By doing this, agents position themselves to add value and build relationships.

Social media can be a great way to reach clients and market to prospects.  Making sure social media is being used wisely as a company and by employees is important to protecting the reputation of everyone involved.
